REMOTE TRAINING COLLARS
Remote training collars are not new and they continue to save dogs’ lives. These inconspicuous training aids have been around for decades. Despite the persistence of some misplaced compassion and misperception, their image problem has abated, but not completely resolved.
That said, the market for remote collars is growing considerably because of their recent integration into smart phone technology. Sold at most large discount pet and outdoor recreation retailers, remote collars are now a staple for training dogs in military, law enforcement, private security and protection and recreational sports.
For companion pets, I endorse a new PetSafe model, which pairs with mobile devices, but there are many options. Remote collars are more humane than most conventional compulsory tools (e.g. prong collars and choke collars, etc.). Increasingly, balanced and experienced companion training professionals are learning how to use these sophisticated tools.
In addition to fun, off-leash recreation, remote collars offer sustainable and reliable off-leash obedience management. Dog owners are often concerned about poor leash management issues. While remote collars assist with leash training, they are most commonly associated with off-leash activity. For example, I use remote collars to effectively “recall” preoccupied or distracted dogs at off-leash dog parks. But they are also suited to prevent escape artists from wandering the neighborhood and pets with strong behavioral drives from running into traffic. Used correctly, remote collars build confidence and strengthen owner pet relations because they are irreplaceable communicative aids and not punitive instruments.
Our remote collar training package includes as many lessons as your family needs to become proficient in using these handheld remote or smart phone remote collars.Remote collars emit sound, static and vibration and are among the most sensitive and safest of compulsory training aids indicated for use with high-energy and challenging canine companions.
As obedience and management tools, remote collars are often preferred over the
use of prong collars (deemed more humane), but sometimes both can be safely incorporated into a training program. One of the most important life-saving behavioral cues or commands conferred by remote collar training (in conjunction with positive reinforcement/reward based training) is recall (i.e. issuing a command for your dog to return to you).
We offer follow-up technical support to make sure you and your whole family are trained and current on best and safest practices for keeping your dog safe, happy and healthy.
